Treasure Trove of Orchids in Plymouth

When we list a home for sale we always ask the sellers what they love about their neighborhood… what is special about it. When we recently met with clients in Plymouth I was amazed when they said 'the orchids down the street'… we didn't even notice these greenhouses and the alpacas driving by when we first arrived!

Orchids Limited is an amazing treasure trove of a wide variety of beautiful species and hybrids from all over the world, including many propagated right in Plymouth, Minnesota!

Miltonia spectabilis alba 'Full Moon' orchidIt was great to talk with the crew at Orchids Limited. Jerry and his staff/family are passionate about flowers, but especially, orchids. They began in 1978 as a very small orchid nursery specializing in mail order and retail. They have since expanded to five orchid greenhouses, each with its own special climate.  They pride themselves on the quality of their products they sell and the customer service they provide.

Orchids Limited is continually evolving their collection and  propagating select forms of species, new and old. They strive to create new directions in orchid hybridization.  They have developed what many of our customers believe to be the best orchid packing and shipping techniques in the industry.  You can read testimonials and hear what people have to say about us!

Orchids Limited shop is located in Plymouth, just west of I-494 and north of Highway 55 at 4630 Fernbrook Lane N. Don't let the plain-looking nursery-style building deter you, what's inside is stunning. Inside you'll find the exotic beauty you seek!

There are thousands of orchid species around the world. Most are beautiful and some are wildly exotic. Orchids have a reputation of being expensive to own, but many varieties are affordable. There are some species that are very rare and nearly priceless.

Here's a more technical bit about orchids:

Orchid 'orchidaceae' is a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants, with blooms that are often colorful and fragrant, commonly known as the orchid family. Along with the asteracaeae aster,  they are one of the two largest families of flowering plants, with between 21,950 and 26,049 currently accepted species.

Phrag. cardinale orchidThe family also includes Vanilla (the genus of the vanilla plant), Orchis (type genus), and many commonly cultivated plants such as Phalaenopsis and Cattleya. Moreover, since the introduction of tropical species into cultivation in the 19th century, horticulturists have produced more than 100,000 hybrids and cultivars.

In perfumery, the scent of orchids is frequently analysed by perfumers to identify potential fragrance chemicals.

The dried seed pods of one orchid genus, Vanilla, are commercially important as flavoring in baking, for perfume manufacture and aromatherapy.

Paph. spring wolf orchidThe underground tubers of terrestrial orchids are ground to a powder and used for cooking, such as in the hot beverage salep or in the Turkish frozen treat dondurma. The name salep has been claimed to come from the Arabic expression ḥasyu al-tha`lab, "fox testicles", but it appears more likely the name comes directly from the Arabic name saḥlab. The similarity in appearance to testes naturally accounts for salep being considered an aphrodisiac.

Orchids have been used in traditional medicine in an effort to treat many diseases and ailments. They have been used as a source of herbal remedies in China since 2800 BC.
