If you know me or have followed by blog you know that I am a homemade ice cream lover… and the Twin Cities is homemade ice cream lover’s heaven! It’s not uncommon for me to alter my route to make a stop at one of my favorite homemade ice cream shops! Here is a list of my current favorite places to get my licks this summer… and they also happen to be in great walkable neighborhoods so you can stroll and lick at the same time! Let me know if your favorite is missing from the list so I can check it out, I am always looking for new places! I am anxious for LaLa Homemade Ice Cream to open soon in Uptown Minneapolis!
- Sebastian Joe’s – established in 1984 and debuted in 1985 in SW Minneapolis… where I first discovered the wonders of homemade ice cream with their raspberry chocolate chip flavor, what I would always ask for as sundae toppings before you could find that flavor combination everywhere – two locations in SW Minneapolis, in Uptown at Hennepin & Franklin near Lake of the Isles and in downtown Linden Hills near Lake Harriet – Sebastian Joe’s… homemade ice cream to lick around the city lakesÂ
- Grand Ole Creamery – making homemade ice cream on Grand Avenue in St. Paul since 1984… over 200 flavors, now with a Minneapolis location on Cedar near Minnehaha Parkway – Grand Ole Creamery… making homemade ice cream since 1984Â
- Sonny’s Ice Cream at Crema Cafe – Sebastian Joe’s and Grand Ole Creamery may be the ones who started me on my homemade ice cream craze in the Twin Cities, but Sonny’s Ice Cream has been made at the corner of 45th and Lyndale in South Minneapolis since 1945… freshly made in small batches and served soft for optimum flavor – Sunday’s Site – Crema Cafe, Minneapolis
- Edina Creamery – on France Avenue near 50th & France, very smooth and creamy, I love their strawberry flavor which has a strawberry slurry combined with strawberry chunks – Great licks at Edina Creamery
- Izzy’s Ice Cream Cafe– home of creative flavors, the ‘Izzy’ scoop (a small scoop topper of another flavor) and the ice cream ‘hot dish’ of 32 Izzy scoops… original shop on Marshall Ave east of Cleveland in St. Paul and another in downtown Minneapolis near Gold Medal Park and the Guthrie – Izzy’s Ice Cream Cafe… home of the ‘izzy’ scoop and the ice cream hot dish
- Pumphouse Creamery – not only one of my all-time favorites, but also named one of the best ice cream spots in the country by Food and Wine Magazine… ingredients are natural, organic, locally sourced… love their amazing homemade waffle cones made with organic grains and seeds… worth a special trip to 48th & Chicago near Minnehaha Parkway in SW Minneapolis – Pumphouse Creamery… one of the best ice cream spots in the country
- Milkjam Creamery – one of the newest shops, with an inventive variety of flavors… signature ‘Milkjam’ flavor made from caramelized goat, cow and condensed milks… try the distinctive taste of ‘Arab’, flavored with a spice derived from the Mediterranean mastic tree… they even have champagne and beer floats and ice cream sandwiches made with Glam Doll Donuts! – Milkjam Creamery… inventive new Uptown homemade ice cream shopÂ
- Adele’s Frozen Custard – although frozen custard isn’t officially ice cream, this Excelsior shop has been a Lake Minnetonka tradition since 1988 so I felt I had to include it even though I personally prefer ice cream… drive by on a summer weekend and you will find it has a great following! – Adele’s… serving fresh frozen custard in Minnetonka lake country since 1988
- Grandpa’s Ice Cream – in Fridley, added to my list of favorites in 2017… Have you been to Grandpa’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor? If not, add it to your list!
