About 40 percent of Minnesota homes have dangerous radon levels

In Minnesota the average radon level is more than three times higher than the national average because we naturally have a lot of it in our soil. Radon gas comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil, and is the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Nationally, more than 21,000 deaths each year are attributed to radon exposure and the Minnesota Department of Health is concerned that only about 1% of homes are tested for it each year yet about 40% of homes have dangerous radon levels.

As we spend more of our time indoors in the winter the risks are even greater. They recommend testing every 2-5 years. Radon test kits are available for only $5-$30 so you can test yourself at minimal cost but it usually takes a couple weeks or more.

Radon professionals can do the testing much quicker, which is why they are usually used in real estate transactions. As of January 1st, anyone who does a radon test in a building that they don’t own or lease must be licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health.

Free and reduced cost radon test kits may be available through local city and county departments of health. Minneapolis is currently offering 200 free test kits.
