Removing Road Salt From Carpet

I was talking to a Realtor this week and he told me that a Client called him complaining that someone looked at their home, but hadn't taken their shoes off.  He said there were road salt stains on the carpet.  He suggested the following to remove the stains and it worked! So, with the current weather right now,  I thought I'd pass it along:

Boot

  • Vacuum the carpet thoroughly to remove any loose salt, dirt and other debris. This will make cleaning up the salt stains easier.
  • Create a cleaning solution made up of equal parts distilled white vinegar and water. Mix the two liquids in a bucket or large bowl.
  • Dip a clean sponge into the solution and wring most of it out. Dab the salt stains with the wet sponge until the area is just moist and the salt stains disappear. Do not saturate the carpet. Let the solution sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Blot the carpet with a clean, dry cloth to soak up any excess vinegar solution. Set up a fan so that it blows on the carpet to help it dry faster. Check the carpet once it is completely dry. If the salt stains persist, dab them with more solution and dry the carpet again. Repeat until the salt stains have completely disappeared.

As soon as it gets warmer, I'm going to try this on my car's carpet!
