 Fair  Fair2 Fair3

It's Fair time!!  I thought I'd publish some fun facts about the Fair today, so here goes:

  • The first Minnesota State Fair was held in 1859
  • The Minnesota State Fair is the largest 12 day event in North America, attracting approximately 1.7 million visitors annually
  • A record 1,790,497 people attended the fair in 2009
  • The daily attendance record was set in 1995 when 225,249 people visited
  • It's the third largest event in the country and the second largest State Fair in the country (right behind the Texas State Fair)
  • The Fairgrounds cover 320 acres
  • The Fair has been held in its present location since 1885
  • The first airplane flight in Minnesota history was at the Fair in 1910
  • Legendary Horse Dan Patch set the world harness racing record at the Grandstand in 1906
  • John Phillip Sousa composed "Minnesota March" and performed it at the Fair in 1927
  • The Midway features more than 30 rides and 50 games of skill, plus 30+ rides at the Kidway
  • There are over 100 acts features at the numerous free entertainment venues and the Fair spends over $500,000 annually on those performers
  • The Miracle of Birth Center is the birthplace of nearly 200 calves, lambs and piglets during the 12 days
  • There are over 5,000+ entries on display in the Creative Activities annual exhibition of handicrafts, baking and canning
  • Nearly 25 local radio and television stations broadcast live from the fairgrounds daily
  • More than 450 foods are available at 300 food concession stands
  • There are over 60+ foods on a stick

And lastly, speaking of the food……yesterday's Star Tribune listed some of the calories of my favorite foods….

  • Corn Dog 350 Calories
  • Cheese Curds 1140 Calories
  • French Fries 310 Calories
  • Mini Donuts 720 Calories
  • Foot Long Hot Dog 540 Calories
  • Chocolate Chip Cookes 580 Calories

Wish they wouldn't have done that!  Oh well….it's once a year!
