First time homebuyer tax credit refunds

If you bought a home for the first time in 2009 and have requested your tax credit with an amended return, you may be waiting awhile.  From information listed in the StarTribune newspaper and from my clients, we are hearing it may be 8 to as many as 20 weeks before you see your tax refund.

Some people are getting letters or phone calls from the IRS requesting additional documentation before they see their refund.  There have been many cases of attempted fraud with the tax credit and so the IRS is being more cautious with the refund.

My suggestion at this time would be to wait until you file your 2009 tax return this spring and add the tax credit form at that time.  You may be able to file your 2009 return as early as February if you have everything together.  If it is taking the IRS 12-20 weeks to return refunds now, you will get your 2009 tax refund sooner by waiting!

Don't forget that if you buy a home in 2010, you can file for the tax credit on your 2009 tax return.  If you are buying early in 2010, you may want to file your tax returns after you close so that you get your money right away.
