Northeast Minneapolis has become the center of the Minneapolis art scene, and at the heart of the district is the historic Northrup King Building, a sprawling complex of 10 buildings first constructed in 1917 for a seed company. Its location between two sets of railroad tracks made it perfect for shipping seeds throughout the country.
The complex is now home to more than 200 creative tenants…including painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, ceramists, textile and fiber artists, jewelers, glass and mosaics, furniture and other creative businesses.
What makes this setting so wonderful is you not only get to see new original work…you also get to meet and talk to the artists as they open their studios the First Thursday of every month from 5 to 9 pm.
When I stopped by last Thursday it was gloomy and rainy outside but the parking lot was full and there was a buzz inside. Artists expressed their delight that people were coming out in spite of the weather…what we do in Minnesota!
This trip I was specifically looking for a jeweler. My husband and I buy an original piece of art every year to celebrate our wedding anniversary…now at 38! We decided to commission new wedding bands this year…and we both planned to come to personally meet a jeweler who we discovered online. Unfortunately, my husband had something come up so he couldn't make it but I went anyway. To my delight I met Betty Jager of 3 Jag Custom Jewelry Design in studio 435, which she shares with three other custom jewelers. My husband and I both plan to meet with her later to 'talk rings'!
As I wandered serendipitously I came upon studio 469, with the wonderful paintings and sculpture of Ray Becoskie and Caprice Glaser, as well as the amazing mosaics of Sharra Frank. Imagine my surprise when I was meeting with a new client in her home the next day and commented on a mosaic…only to discover she had created it in a class with Sharra Frank!
In visiting with Caprice and Ray I learned that they had each developed their own independent bodies of work and found each other because of their similar styles…only to discover they live only 8 blocks apart! Hence began their 8blockrule collaboration, which includes collaborative works. I have a feeling something of theirs will make its way into our home at some point…
