Despite nay-sayers when the Hiawatha LRT was built and launched five years ago, light-rail transit is here to stay in the Twin Cities area. As of June of this year, ridership had already exceeded projections for the year 2020 by 20%!
When we recently rode from the Mall of America to a Twins game we joined the ranks of more than 2 million riders recorded to Twins home games. Work has been completed on the extension of the LRT to the new Minnesota Twins stadium for next year's games and the connection to the Northstar Commuter Rail Line scheduled to begin service later this year between Big Lake and downtown Minneapolis.
This connection will create a 52-mile passenger rail network for the Twin Cities, which will increase to 62 miles in 2014 when service begins on the Central Corridor connecting downtown Minneapois with downtown St. Paul.
Having rail lines somehow makes living here feel more metropolitan, as we have joined the ranks of other metro areas worldwide with rail lines. The addition of the line out to Big Lake will also make living in the northwest corridor much more do-able, with both time and cost savings for those commuting into the city.
