We are in the middle of having a garage sale. We had never had one, or been to one before, but about 3 years ago, my Sister talked us in to it. So we've had a couple of them since.
We opened early on Wednesday and had an average of 10-15 people in the garage all day!! We do live on a busy street, which makes it great to have a sale like this. We've had good sales before, but this one tops them all.
People are really out there looking for bargains. We had a dining room table and chairs that could have sold 5 times….a bookcase that was the same and a firepit that almost had people fighting over it!
It's a great way to clean out your house! And yes, it's a huge amount of work!! But, we unloaded so much stuff. Garage sales are great if you're selling or staying…..clutter goes! Prices are right and bargains are many.
And then I had an elderly man stop by and look at a cedar chest we were selling. He wanted it so badly, but didn't have the money until Saturday he said. I had a price of $125.00 on it. I took his name and number and told him I would call if it didn't sell. He kept looking at it and sitting on the chest. He said he loved it, but just couldn't get enough money together until he "got his check on Saturday". He left and came back about 15 minutes later and tried to give me $30 to hold it, but we were so busy, I moved on. While propping my feet up that night, we were all sitting around talking about the day. I mentioned the chest. My Sister told me to call him, reduce the price and hold it for him. I felt so bad….she was right. I'm usually a very generous person. Wednesday I wasn't. It was busy and I didn't take the time to care about someone else. He truly wanted this one piece of furniture and I was too busy give him the time of day. So, I called him on Thursday a.m. and told him I was sorry. He could have the chest on Saturday for $100. He was thrilled.
I think the economy has played a part in our Garage Sale this year. But I learned a lesson too…..we're all going so fast all the time….sometimes we need to slow down and look at what's going on around us. Life is short and there's lessons to be learned….even at garage sales.
