Replace or Reface Cabinets

I've been in the home improvement industry for over 20 years.  I ran a 65M retail business that sold kitchen/bath remodeling.  If anyone ever mentioned the word "refacing" about cabinets I would have said to run and run fast!

But on Wednesday, I visited a Company in Indianapolis that refaces cabinets.  The Owner took the time to explain the process.  I would never have considered refacing an option because my only knowledge was thin laminate/veneer skins that are placed on old cabinets.  This particular Company has been in business doing refacing for over 28 years.  Their refacing is 1/4" wood….not thin veneer.  Plus, they warranty the product for LIFE!!  Looking at the finished product I was astounded.  It was beautiful and completely changed my mind about refacing.  I would still not reface with a veneer product, but I would consider this process.

This is not a commercial for any Company.  The one I mentioned doesn't even service this area.  I write about this issue today because I do see homes in desperate need of a new kitchen when selling.  Often times, that can be a costly undertaking.  My understanding is that this process can be done at about 40% less than a full cabinet replacement.  Plus, most refacing is done within 1-2 days and can include many options like roll out trays, dovetail drawers etc.

If you really want a new configuration in your kitchen, or you want to move walls etc, buy new cabinets.  But if you're happy with the way your kitchen functions, have a new countertop or floor you want to keep, are selling, or just don't want to go through a lengthy process….I can actually tell you to consider refacing!
