A recent survey prepared for AARP showed that 26% of baby boom generation households expect to move, with the majority of them looking for one-level living. For many in this part of the country that can mean trading the family two-story for a one-story home, often with a walkout basement. It's frequently not so much a matter of downsizing as rearranging space, perhaps to a newer home with even more space to accommodate visits from growing extended family.
As temperatures dip into the double digits below zero thoughts also turn to warmer temperatures. Many who expect to move say they will be looking for a warmer or better climate or a home that is closer to family and friends.
Some people I work with sell their 'family' home and exchange it for multiple homes in different locations for use at different times of the year. Their homes may include several smaller homes such as condos, townhomes, lake homes in different parts of the country, and may also include timeshares for regular traveling to different parts of the country and the world.
There are so many choices in style and location you can search for what is right for you and your lifestyle at this point in time. And don't feel you have to be locked into one decision for the rest of your life…housing needs and options will continue to change throughout our lives. The sheer number of boomers will likely create an increasing variety of home and community possibilities combining easy living and inviting design.
