It's easy to forget as you cross the Hennepin Avenue Bridge between downtown and Northeast Minneapolis that you are not only crossing the Mississippi…you are also crossing over Nicollet Island, the only inhabited island on the Mississippi River. The island is currently parkland owned by the city of Minneapolis and has its own historic bridge built in 1887 connecting it to historic St. Anthony Main.
Secrets of the island include…
- Nicollet Island Pavilion, a great event site
- Historic Nicollet Island Inn, oft voted the most romantic Twin Cities site for dinner or an overnight getaway
- De La Salle High School, a private catholic school
- A couple dozenVictorian-era homes
- Grove Street Flats, a Second Empire 1877 rowhouse
- West Island, a small 1980's condominium
- Parkland and trails for walking, biking, jogging
When the island was first developed in the late 1800's it was believed it would become the posh neighborhood in Minneapolis. Instead it has had a checkered past and Grove Street Flats was even once a flophouse. Revived in the 1980's, the island is now a peaceful historic retreat with beautiful city views and brick paved streets in the housing part of the island giving the feeling that you have been transported back in time.
