It seems that fall is quickly slipping away, and I had been planning an apple orchard visit for a long time. Finally, we made it…enjoying a visit on a beautiful fall weekend. We are blessed with many apple orchards in the Twin Cities area, and living on the west side of the metro for more than 20 years we have usually visited orchards on that side. This year we decided to go the opposite direction and visit Aamodt's Apple Farm in Stillwater, MN.
Although the pick-your-own apple season is long over, there was still lots of activity, plenty fresh apples and delicious fresh pressed cider…they even had apple brats! They make it a family destination, with activities such as pony rides, a petting zoo, a hay bale maze, hay rides and a great haystack for just climbing, jumping and playing.
The farm is open through December and they say they have the largest supply of the delicious Minnesota Honeycrisp Apple, which you can also order online for delivery anywhere in the United States. I was amazed to learn they grow over 30 varieties of apples, and also have a vineyard!
Aamodt's is located on the west end of Stillwater, a charming St. Croix River Valley town that started in the 1800's. It is often called the birthplace of Minnesota because the state charter was drafted here in 1843. Nestled along the river, the city is beautiful in all seasons and great care has been taken to preserve its historic buildings and parks. Midwest Living named it one of 100 Best Small-Town Getaways, with charming B & B's, unique shops and restaurants.
It is also a great place to live, close to the Twin Cities but with a historic small town feel. Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard chose Stillwater as the place to raise their family and lived here for a number of years. The surrounding area includes a variety of homes of all ages and current listings even include a stunning Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian home!
