Wednesdays Unplugged – Snickers Puppy Chow

“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” – Buddy the Elf, from ELF

NOTE: I spend my Wednesdays Unplugged from appointments. It’s my day to stay home, enjoy cooking and welcome our kids and grandkids for dinner in the evening. We end our meal with quotes from the Norwegian ‘Quote Cup’ passed on to me from my grandmother. I share a quote and a recipe here each week, along with an update and photos of what has been going on in our lives. I love trying new recipes…and love getting recipes you would like to share!

The movie Elf has been a long-time favorite of some of our family members… so we decided that would be our family concert event this year. We will be laughing in the audience at Orchestra Hall this weekend as we watch it together with a live orchestra. It is hard to believe that next Wednesday is Christmas Day!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Our grandson is a lover of both Snickers candy bars and Puppy Chow. So… when I saw a recipe for Snickers Puppy Chow from Delish I knew I had to try it. He said it was good, but he missed the peanut butter in the original… nevertheless, we sent him home with a bag to enjoy over the holidays.

SNICKERS PUPPY CHOW

  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2/3 cup good quality caramel sauce
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 7 cups Chex cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups roasted, salted peanuts
  • 2 cups powdered confectioner’s sugar

In a medium saucepan over low heat, cook chips, caramel sauce, and butter, stirring, until melted and smooth (about 5 minutes). Stir in vanilla and salt.

Place cereal in a large bowl. Drizzle chocolate mixture over and gently toss to coat.

Fold in peanuts. Add confectioners’ sugar and toss until well coated.

NOTE: through many years of making this for our grandson, I have learned the best way to mix it without getting powdered sugar over everything is to put it all in a jumbo food storage bag to mix it. It’s the best way to get the puppy chow evenly coated with getting yourself evenly coated as well!!
