Wrecktangle Pizza… winner of Good Morning America’s “United States of Pizza” contest

When we first visited The Market Malcolm Yards food hall last fall our focus was Bebe Zito… I was seeking their amazing ice cream and didn’t even notice Wrecktangle Pizza in the corner next to them.

When we were there last week they had added a GMA Minneapolis sign and #PIZZAonGMA to celebrate their national notoriety. It was their ‘Very Nice Breakfast’ pizza that was the winner, so of course we had to try that one… and we also ordered their ‘Shredder’ house pizza to go.

This was our first taste of Wrecktangle Pizza and the first thing we noticed was the pizzas seemed small… only one size, 8″ x 10″, with rectangle pieces that are a signature of Detroit style pizza. What got me was the thick crust that wasn’t heavy… it was light and airy and delicious, with cheese all the way to the edges, forming a crispy, cheesy edge.

They looked amazing, and one taste confirmed it… this is my new favorite style pizza! The winning breakfast pizza is topped with pork sausage gravy, soft scrambled eggs, bacon jam, seven kinds of cheese and fried sage leaves. The GMA cooking show host supposedly said it shouldn’t work but he ‘freakin’ loved it!’

I didn’t love that pizza, but the ‘Shredder’ pizza made me glad we took it home… I kept craving it for every meal for two days!!! My understanding is their specialty cheese blend is Parmesan, Mozzarella and White Cheddar… and this house specialty also features Pecorino Romano cheese with pepperoni, pickled jalapenos, and whipped cry baby craig’s honey (from nearby Faribault, MN) with red sauce. I wasn’t sure what I would think of the pickled jalapenos but I loved them… not sure if it was the jalpenos or the honey or the combination of the two that gave the special kick that put this pizza over the top, but it was amazing!

When I talked to our son, I learned he also checked out Wrecktangle Pizza the same day. They were sold out of the breakfast pizza when he was there but he also ordered the Shredder and raved about it!!

Are you ready to try it for yourself? It’s available at Wrecktangle‘s three locations: its flagship at 703 W. Lake St., Mpls.; in the Market at Malcolm Yards, 501 30th Av. SE., Mpls.; and its original location at the North Loop Galley, 729 N. Washington Av., Mpls.
