The Normandale Park neighborhood of Edina is home to many Lundgren Contemporary homes. Richard Lundgren designed and built hundreds of homes across the Twin Cities from the late 1940s through the 1970s, with a style that reflected the architectural trends of the day. The majority of his work can be found in Richfield, Edina, Bloomington, and Saint Louis Park.
His houses in the Normandale Park neighborhood were heavily influenced by the California Ranch style homes popular in the 1950s, and he was one of the first builders in the Twin Cities to use sliding glass patio doors at that time (which had to be special ordered from California!)
Many of his homes featured beamed and vaulted redwood ceilings, skylights and stone floors. He was known for designing homes based on the needs of the families who commissioned them.
This weekend is a rare treat to see a couple examples of Lundgren’s work on Whiting Avenue at the 2022 Docomomo Fall Tour on October 8, 2022, along with renovations and an addition by Kari Nelson, architect.
