Minneapolis boasts one of the top park systems in the country, including The Grand Rounds with about 50 miles of trails encircling the city. But the metro area park system doesn’t stop there.
Three Rivers Park District is amazing! With 27,000 acres in about 25 different parks there is something for just about everyone. It includes 240 miles of off-road biking/hiking trails, 80 miles of cross-country ski trails, and boating on 30 lakes, rivers and streams.
Activities include: archery, art education, biking, boating, camping, cross-country skiing, disc golf, off leash dog parks, dog trails, downhill and telemark skiing, educational farming, fishing, formal gardens, geocaching, golfing, hiking, history exploration, horseback riding, mountain biking, nature education, paddling, picnic areas, play areas, skijoring and dog sledding, sledding, snowboarding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, swimming and tubing.
It was such a glorious weekend, we spent time in two Three Rivers Parks. On Saturday we met with clients in Silverwood Park in Saint Anthony… one of my favorites, that used to be a Boy Scout Camp and now has a focus on nature and the arts.
Then on Sunday we went hiking at Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve in Prior Lake, which has 18 miles of trails for hiking, 13 miles of trails for horseback riding and 10 miles for mountain biking. Their website describes it well…
The peaceful wilderness at Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve in northeast Scott County features glacial ridges, hilly terrain and an extensive, lush forest. This park features one of the most challenging cross-country ski areas in the Twin Cities, and a popular mountain bike trail. With the exception of the trails, the park reserve remains undeveloped, making it the best park in Three Rivers for birdwatchers to spot woodland songbirds. This park has also been designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society.
