The weather factor

seasons

Weather is a central character in our sense of place in Minnesota and last week was a prime example… never before have we had so much snow so early in the season! Stager Shar said they got 10 inches… the most in 140 years this early in October! We have promise of warmer days the end of this week so hopefully the snow we have will all melt, but who knows how long until the next snow dump.

If you want reliably predictable weather Minnesota may not be the place for you, but it is a key element in defining our sense of place. It is also something to think about when selecting a home.

For example, you may love the long winding road to your home… but appreciate it less when it comes to plowing the snow. Likewise a smaller driveway may be even more difficult to deal with… where will you put all the snow you are shoveling or blowing? What about when the snow melts… will it come into your basement?

trees

Likewise above, the trees make a great privacy screen when filled with leaves… not so much when the leaves are gone. You could be surprised at what is behind the trees in your back yard after the leaves have fallen. This is a time when it is good to notice how much greenery is ‘evergreen’ and how much is deciduous.

It is easy to forget about the practicalities when you are enjoying the beauty before the snow flies… try to think of circumstances in all weather. It may be worth the inconvenience, but good to consider it before it becomes an issue.
