Looking for something to do on a staycation weekend or introducing friends and family to the Twin Cities? The Guthrie Theater is one of the best places to get a great view of the riverfront where the city of Minneapolis got its start. It is also one of the city’s most distinctive buildings… it’s hard to miss!
Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, don’t be surprised when you are invited to take a giant escalator up to fourth flour… he brilliantly designed the main theater lobby higher than the traditional ground floor to take advantage of the spectacular views.
Guthrie Theater Tours are offered every Friday and Saturday at 10:00 am. Visit the thrust and proscenium stages, scene shop, costume shop, prop shop, rehearsal rooms and more.
It never ceases to amaze me how they design each production from the ground up… meaning they hire not only directors and performers, but also stage and costume designers. Then their full-time staff brings the sets and costumes to life. See where it is all done… on site!
They also offer a more in-depth architecture tour twice a month. Come on Saturday morning during the summer months and plan a little extra time for Mill City Farmer’s Market in the plaza next door.
