Housing inventory has been low for so long it’s hard to pin exactly why that is because it is a combination of so many reasons… but people I meet continue to ask that very question. In chatting with my doctor at my annual checkup this week she said she had considered selling her little house and moving up… but decided she liked the location where she is living so much that she made the decision to remodel her kitchen instead and stay where she is!
LOCATION
Location is likely one factor contributing to the housing shortage. People are recognizing more and more that you can change things about your house but you can’t change its location… it is what it is and if you don’t like it all you can do is move… or stay if you love it.
My doctor lives near Minnehaha Falls and trails and decided she didn’t want to leave… which means one less house for sale. But it is a prime example of what people love about living in Minneapolis.
Minnehaha Parkway is one of the most popular trails in the Twin Cities, and for good reason. Its 12.6 miles following Minnehaha Creek leaves Lake Harriet at the southern end of the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes and ends at Minnehaha Falls and Park where the creek flows into the Mississippi River. Along the way it passes through some of the most desirable neighborhoods in south Minneapolis… finally arriving atop Minnehaha Falls.
I don’t know the actual numbers, but I would guess this trail is second only to the Chain of Lakes in popularity. It is a key to defining the sense of place of Minneapolis and one of the reasons people love living here.
