Now, I’m not that old, but I think the first time I ate at Ping’s Szechuan Bar & Grill was in the 1970’s, about 50 years ago! We were just country bumpkins when we went to Ping’s the first time. I was certainly impressed at this “big city” experience. Whether or not I remember that date correctly, the sign above their famous pink awning professes that they were a Silverspoon Award Winner in 1985… still over 30 years ago!
Ping’s is oddly located, even for being on Nicollet Avenue and ‘Eat Street.’ It’s “kind of” around the bend of the street with only a few other immediately neighboring restaurants. Many restaurants and businesses have come and gone over the years but the pink awning of Ping’s is still there.
We have long been impressed with dinner at Pings but don’t often make it there during the day. I’m glad my friend and I were able to go there Friday for the noon buffet. There was a good selection of tasty fare. Chinese staples mainly, but well done. . . . Szechuan chicken, green beans, rice and more.
I suppose a bit of the “luster” has worn off, but the food is good. I’m going again.
