When we had a beautiful warm, sunny day a couple weeks ago that really felt like spring we were lucky to have an unclaimed spot in the middle of the day. I have learned to seize the day when that happens… and what better way to spend it than by getting some homemade ice cream and going for a neighborhood walk.
MILKJAM CREAMERY is one of the most recent additions to the wonderful selection of Twin Cities homemade ice cream shops, but we hadn't been there yet… off we went. Located on Lyndale just north of the Midtown Greenway and Hennepin Avenue and connected to World Street Kitchen, this trendy Uptown location is perfect for this inventive shop to add your must-stop list.
They have an amazing variety of 16 constantly rotating flavors, including many gluten free and about half of them vegan. We got there at just the right time when our server (who I believe may be the "ice cream chef") had time to talk and tell us about the samples he happily shared. Everything we tasted was distinctive, but we both decided to go with black and white flavors, although 'Grandma's Blueberry Crumble' and others were tempting.
John chose their signature 'Milkjam' flavor, made from caramelized goat, cow and condensed milks… and 'Black', made from the darkest cocoa. I always ask what flavors they have with nuts and was fascinated by the distinctive taste of 'Arab', flavored with a spice derived from the Mediterranean mastic tree of the cashew family which also gave it a more elastic texture. The tree is related to the pistachio, which made the pistachios in the ice cream a perfect fit. My second scoop was 'Hard Knock Life', dark chocolate with salted pretzels, brownies and chocolate fudge… no hardship eating that.
But this shop doesn't stop at ice cream… they also have a signature 'Jam Bun', your choice of ice cream scoop and toppings sandwiched in a Glam Doll Donut… 'adult' floats with champagne, lambic and beer… ice cream sandwiches and other treats to come…
Once you get your ice cream, this is a great neighborhood for strolling, perched in Uptown on the eastern edge of the 'Lowry Hill East' neighborhood (AKA The Wedge). Let us know if you would like to check out homes for sale in the area!
