It is not only at holiday time that Americans long to be with family. According to a recent article from the NY Times, the typical American lives only 18 miles from Mom.
Baby Boomers are truly the sandwich generation, and it is amazing how many I work with who are making a move to be closer to family… moving both to and from the Twin Cities for the same purpose.
Sometimes the move is to help care for family members, but just as often it is to be close enough to experience life together. Sometimes to help with child care.
I have helped numerous retired couples move to the Twin Cities to be close to their children and grandchildren so they could spend 'regular' time together and help with busy lives.
Last year I helped a family with school age children move out of the Twin Cities to live closer to family so their kids could grow up knowing their grandparents better.
In our family, it was my mother who moved here from her ND farm to be closer to my family, her grandchildren and great grandchildren in the Twin Cities.
This trend is likely to only grow as the population ages. Only 20% of Americans currently live more than a couple hours from their parents… will you be part of the trend that drives that percentage even lower?
