Where do you want to live as you grow older? The answer to that is as unique as you are, as I find all the time when I work with Baby Boomers moving in, out and around the metro area. I find that two strong connecting themes are a desire to live in a 'walkable community', in a home where they can 'age in place'. In fact, an AARP survey found that 85% of those surveyed age 50+ said they wish to remain in their community for as long as possible.
The exhibition currently at the Goldstein Museum of Design through May 22, 2011, Smart House, Livable Community, Your Future, explores ways to use technologyand design to adapt your home to your needs as you age. The interactive exhibit welcomes you into the small, fictitious home of Jim and Sarah and their renovation process… starting with wider doorways and flat thresholds and continuing with such practical adaptations as kitchens with lower countertops, divided dishwasher drawers and moving dishes from upper wall cabinets to drawers.
