Paper Depot is one of those places you don't usually just happen upon… unless you happen to see it while visiting the Minneapolis Farmer's Market (now filled with Christmas trees) and wonder about the unassuming low building that looks more commercial than retail carved into a corner of the market.
Don't be fooled… it is definitely retail… and a haven for those creating handmade cards, invitations and announcements. Very popular for wedding invitations, they also offer classes… but don't worry, if you don't want to do it yourself they will also create them for you.
With huge selections of fine papers and envelopes, rubber stamps and ribbons this has been my go-to destination for a very long time… and because of their high volume and low overhead prices are good. Don't be concerned if you have kids in tow… they even have a kid's play area in the center of the store so you can shop in relative peace.
When I stopped by Paper Depot recently to pick up some paper supplies it made me smile to hear co-workers bantering back and forth. I always knew that in spite of the dizzying array of selections (they call themselves America's most complete paper store and I believe it!) it has always felt warm and welcoming, with a focus on personal attention. As it turns out there is a reason for that.
I learned that Paper Depot has been family owned and operated since 1976, when they took over a failed commercial paper business. They gradually got into rubber stamps by listening to customer requests, later added classes, and the rest is history! Many family members continue to work there… and they like working together, which is part of what gives it such a cozy feeling.
If you are ever in need of specialty papers, don't miss this outstanding store… and you can also stop and pick up something at the Farmer's Market while you are there!
Although this is primarily a commerical area not far from Target Field, condos and conversions in the Minneapolis warehouse district and International Market Square (IMS) are nearby.
