When a client recently asked me if buyers are still looking for fireplaces I realized that while fireplaces used to be on most buyers' wish lists, they aren't any more. It seems like for many buyers the desire for a fireplace has been replaced by space for a big-screen TV.
While there are still buyers who would like a fireplace, rarely is it a deal-breaker… perhaps also because most buyers now prefer gas fireplaces to wood-burning ones, both for ease of use and energy-efficiency, and gas fireplaces are relatively easy to install.
Statistics also back up declining interest in fireplaces. According to the Census Bureau, 66% of new homes had at least one fireplace in 1990… but only 49% included a fireplace in 2009, according to the National Association of Homebuilders.
The National Association of Homebuilders indicates these features have been falling out of style…
- Fireplaces
- Carpet
- Living room
- Kitchen desks
- Skylights
- Granite countertops
