With more than 1,100 acres of beautiful public gardens and 12.5 miles of trails, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum provides both an idyllic getaway and a wealth of inspiration. Its display and specialty gardens range from formal to wildflowers, and with more than 5,000 plant species and varieties, many of them labeled, it can help you pick flowers, trees and shrubs for your own landscaping.
Open year round, the Minnesota Landscape Arborteum is part of the University of Minnesota which not only provides a beautiful setting for spending a relaxing afternoon or celebrating weddings and other special events, but also is a signficant national horticultural resource, research and education center. We are lucky to have it in our own backyard!
A special treat at the Arborteum this year is the 'Uff Da Palace'… designed by internationally acclaimed artist Patrick Dougherty. If you aren't a native of the Upper Midwest, you might not be familiar with the Norwegian term 'uff da'… neither was the artist. In his own words…
“I had never heard the term ‘uff da’ before. When I asked what it meant, everyone had a slightly different answer. So, it reflects the different experiences people will have when seeing and exploring the sculpture.”
This whimsical living sculpture was created with the help of more than 80 volunteers entirely of thousands of willow twigs, branches and saplings twisted together. It is fascinating to walk both around and through this unique structure. He said he designed it with snow covering in mind… will it look like an igloo in the winter?
