The top features buyers want…and don’t want

J0148981 Homebuyers usually have a pretty good idea of both what they want and what they don't want, although there is nearly always some compromise involved. It's that compromise in priorities that often makes the difference… finding just the right blend of searchable features and intangible 'feel' of a property that makes a house say 'home'.

According to a recent survey of 1,000 online house hunters by ZipRealty the top 10 preferences were largely the same for men and women except for two differences which I found interesting…

  • Having a view made it onto the men's list but not the women's list
  • Hardwood floors made it onto the women's list but not the men's

Overall the biggest turnoffs were…

  • Structural damage
  • Bad odors
  • Busy street
  • Awkward floor plan

The top 10 most desired home features in order of preference were…

  • Garage or parking space
  • Master suite
  • Ample storage space
  • Large or walk-in closets
  • Guest bedroom
  • Outdoor entertainment area
  • Gourmet or updated kitchen
  • Breakfast room or eat-in kitchen
  • Large yard
  • Wood floors
