Week of April 26, 2010 – walking trails
Chain of Lakes… this byway system around Minneapolis's famous city lakes has 13.3 miles of walking and biking trails and is part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway parkwayof 50.1 miles… it is second only to the Mall of America in number of visitors per year… Lake of the Isles is in the photo
Nine Mile Creek Trail… this beautiful Bloomington walking trail peacefully ambles along its way to the Minnesota River in a wooded valley with multiple access points… 100th & James (HarrisonPark), 104th & Morgan (Moir Park), 106th & Morgan (car park), 112th & Queen
Loring Greenway… this park-like urban walkway connects Nicollet Mall to Loring Park and on to the Armajani-designed pedestrian bridge to the Sculpture Garden…it includes fountains, flowers, playground, all under a canopy of trees… access in downtown Minneapolis on Nicollet Mall between 12th & 13th
Pike Island Trail… at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, this pedestrian only trail is about a 3 mile loop… part of 18 miles of trails in Fort Snelling State Park in the heart of the Twin Cities… access the park east on Post Rd off Hwy 5 near the airport…or start at Ft Snelling light rail stop for a 4.45 mile loop trail
Winchell Trail… a hiking-only trail on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis between Franklin Ave and 44th Street. Unpaved paths break off along the bluffs and into the woods, allowing you to really experience the lower gorge and some rugged paths in the heart of the city.
Minnehaha Parkway… one of the most popular trails in the Twin Cities, connecting Lake Harriet and Minnehaha Falls… 12.6 miles through some of the most desireable neighborhoods in south Minneapolis… access north of Crosstown Hwy 62, meandering from west to east a few blocks south and north of 50th Street
