About dogs and townhomes…

Mandogbeach I have had several townhome listings lately and it's interesting what the sellers tell me when I ask about pet restrictions, specifically dogs.

  • There is a height, weight and number limit but there are some big dogs in the complex…it's not really enforced
  • The only restrictions are what the city requires, same as a house
  • There are no dogs allowed, but the rules have changed back and forth several times so there are some dogs in the complex allowed to stay because of previous rules…but no new dogs are allowed at this time
  • There are no more than two pets allowed, but if they stay inside no one really cares so two cats and a dog should be ok

Yesterday I had a couple different people come to my open house at a townhouse that doesn't allow dogs…but has some dogs in the complex because of prior rules.  They both loved the unit and assumed dogs were allowed because they had seen some in the complex. They told me to give them a call if the association decides to allow dogs again!

If you have pets and are considering buying a townhome, be sure to not only go by what you observe or what the listing says but also talk to people who live there. Rules could be in transition or 'bendable' depending on the complex. Also keep in mind that what is entered into the listing is 'deemed reliable but not guaranteed'. If you are considering making an offer on a townhome and have a dog be sure to investigate beyond the lisitng for rules about pets…you don't want to be surprised when you move in!
