Governor Dayton declares June 11 Minnesota Boychoir Day

The Twin Cities is filled with arts opportunities and choirs is one of them. The Minnesota Boychoir holds a special place in my heart because our grandson sings with them, and I also joined their adult choir this year. It’s pretty amazing that we got to sing in Orchestra Hall tonight, celebrating their 55th year, their conductor’s 25th year and their accompanist’s 20th year. There is nothing quite like hearing more than 160 young voices singing together beautifully… and not only do they develop exceptional musical ability, they also develop a sense of poise and self-confidence through education and performance. Each member is challenged to sing well, stand tall, stay on schedule, take pride in his appearance, respect those in charge, and tap into the best part of who he is and what he can accomplish.

Over the past 55 years, the Boychoir has been honored with performances at local, state, regional and national music conventions. They have sung for kings and queens, shared the stage with local and national artists, poets, and composers, and performed the National Anthem for hundreds of thousands of sports fans. The Minnesota Boychoir regularly appears alongside the Minnesota Orchestra, and has also performed with the Minnesota Opera, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” on National Public Radio.

Today, the Boychoir includes singers age 6-18 from over forty communities throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area. They have a regional, national or international tour each year and have performed in 17 states and 5 continents, including Westminster Abbey, the Sydney Opera House, and St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.
