Moving Checklist… getting ready to move

MOVING CHECKLIST – free detailed checklist, starting 1-2 months before your move

Moving happened a lot in the United States in the last century, usually for economic reasons. Nearly a third of the population moved each year at the beginning of the 1900s, nearly half in 1950 and down to 14% in 2000. People are now staying in their homes longer… in 2005 the typical homeowner stayed in their home for 6.5 years… up to about 12 years in 2023.

This of course contributes to the shortage of homes available for sale. In fact, a Redfin survey found that 43% of homeowners over 60 say they don’t plan to ever sell their homes, 27% of homeowners say they don’t plan to sell for at least 10 years and only 15% expect to list in the next 5 years.

This means that when seniors do sell, they frequently have decades of accumulated ‘stuff’ and memories that make the move that much more difficult. It also can take a lot of time to downsize.

A couple that I worked with who closed on their sale last week first contacted me in 2016 for a preliminary walk-through about how to get ready to sell… we met again in 2021… and finally in 2024 when they were ready to sell after a place opened up for them in senior housing. They had lived in their home for 34 years. It was a long process, and they worked with Two Dames and Friends for downsizing… with Gentle Transitions (now WellRive) for their move… and with Rooms with Style for staging.

We listed their home the end of January, reviewed 12 outstanding offers after only 2 days on the market, and accepted one which closed last week… a very successful sale!

The happy buyers are on the left, shortly after having their offer accepted… and the happy sellers are on the right, shortly after signing their closing documents.
