Which US cities have the best and worst work-life balance?

Neighborhoods-Chain of Lakes CNN reported this week on the most overworked cities in the US and those with the healthiest work-life balance. Some of their results may surprise you.

Minneapolis ranked #4 on the list of cities with the healthiest work-life balance, just before New York City!

  1. San Diego
  2. Portland
  3. San Francisco
  4. Minneapolis
  5. New York

According to the study the following are the most overworked cities in the US…

  1. Washington, DC
  2. Houston
  3. Atlanta
  4. Seattle
  5. Chicago

The survey was conducted by KISI, and they explained their motivation below.

“Whether in or out of the office, we understand the value of time and believe that dedicating too much of it to your job interferes with life outside of work, and vice-versa,” Kisi said. To that end, they  conducted their survey to determine in which cities residents have “the most well-rounded” work-life balance. The survey looked at 20 different factors, including work intensity, city livability and “the well-being and rights of their inhabitants.”

First, they considered factors relating to the amount of time a person dedicates to their job—such as total working hours, commuting, and vacation days taken. Next, they evaluated access to state-funded health and welfare programs, as well as institutional support for gender equality and friendliness toward the LGBT+ community. Then they determined each city’s livability score by examining citizens’ overall happiness, safety, and access to wellness and leisure venues… factors which relate to whether residents can enjoy their environment after office hours.

Kisi explained that their index was not designed to be a city livability index, nor was it intended to highlight the best cities to work in; instead, its aim was to be a guideline for cities to benchmark their ability to support the fulfillment of residents’ lives by improving the aspects of life that help relieve work-related stress and intensity.
