Tillie’s Farmhouse, Splendidly Homespun!

tillies1

The snow and ice were mostly gone and we were walking the streets of Merriam Park, exploring this neighborhood near the river and the University of Thomas in St Paul when we felt a bit peckish. Tillie’s Farmhouse came up on our restaurant app… and the wonderful experience began!

We found Tillie’s Farmhouse in the neighborhood storefront that used to be home to Trotter’s Cafe, around the corner from Izzy’s Ice Cream on Marshall. The food statement on their website sums it up nicely…

Whenever possible, we source locally and with integrity. Our food is prepared in the farmhouse tradition-simple, fresh, wholesome, and from scratch. Tillie’s is a neighborhood favorite where friends and family can enjoy a meal together at the farmhouse table. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday, with a special brunch menu available on weekends.

Tillie’s granddaughter and son started this great place to eat a few years back, truly farmhouse fresh!

I honestly believe that Tillie’s has the best “hash browns” I’ve ever had! Chopped potatoes fried crisp and dark brown and the spicing was marvelous! The egg was just right, sort of poached, warm and tasty. And their sausage, of which they are rightly praised, was sweet and spicy. Wow! Sharlene had their Turkey Butter Burger and loved it! She didn’t have room for the yummy looking carrot but couldn’t resist so took a slice to go… smart move, delicious!

Our only regret was missing the live music from the Wayward Creek Band, who were just setting up when we were leaving. Three women singers with guitars and a keyboard. As they say:  . . . singing in harmony is a joy that shows when we play together. And between the three of us we play a whole heap of instruments – guitar, piano, accordion, banjo, harmonica, percussion and the occasional kazoo.

All in all a great experience. Their philosophy of creating a gathering place with wholesome food and an atmosphere fostering community was summed up in the sign hanging above our table in the photo below. We’ll be back!
