“Cwtch” (rhymes with hutch), a hot new design trend, got its inspiration in Wales, where it means a “hug” or “cuddle”…. and also a cubbyhole or hiding place. Like its Scandinavian counterpart “Hygge” that was big a few years ago, it is about a warm, comfy approach to design. It is a matter of surrounding yourself with things you love and making your home feel like an inviting retreat.
Some ways to add some cwtch to your life…
Soft Textures
Think cuddly blankets and throws, warm sock slippers. The idea is to choose things that are soft and comforting.
Candles, Light Dimmers
Burn candles to create a soft glow, and dim the lights. It’s about what makes you relax and feel good.
A Roaring Fire
There is nothing like the cozy feel of a warm fire to create the feel of a small, safe place. Don’t have a fireplace? Play a video of one from a streaming online site. Just watching a roaring fire can ‘warm’ the room and be very soothing and comforting… and it is also perfect for snuggling with a good book or a favorite companion.
Inspiring Messages, Family Photos
Cwtch is all about feeling safe and secure at home. Choose some quotes that speak to you and frame them so you see them as daily inspiration. Also frame photos of your loved ones and display them where you are sure to see them every day to create the feeling of a warm and safe place in your home.
Bake Bread and Cookies, Host Informal Dinner Parties
There is nothing like the smell of freshly baked cookies and bread wafting through your home to create a warm, safe and cozy feeling. Start a tradition of inviting friends/family over once a month (2nd Friday?) for a pot luck, and have everyone bring their favorite comfort food. You can even end this “cwtch” evening by cuddling together on the couch.
As we feel the bite of winter this week, there is no better excuse for some quality “cwtch” time! And if you are selling, adding some “cwtch” could help buyers fall in love with your home.
Time for a snuggle…
