If you are thinking about remodeling or renovating be sure you take the time to think about what is relevant now. Here is a perfect example….
This past summer I updated my kitchen and my last post "New Year. New Face" showed the before and after photos. I am so glad I did the kitchen!
One of the things that was in the kitchen was a built-in desk.
This was something that was hot in the 90's and you saw it in all new construction homes. My home was built in 1999 thus the desk.
It looks great at first until you realize no one every sits there and it becomes a dumping ground for everything. See mine?? Major clutter zone! Builders do not put these directly in kitchens any more as no one wants them.
When I was remodeling I took the time to see how much it would cost to convert that desk into something more relevant. Raising the entire area up to standard counter height didn't make sense from a cost standpoint for a return on the investment if I sold within five years. I needed to consider what I could do with the space with the lower counter height.
Right now coffee stations are really in and wine bar areas are always in so that's what I did. I measured for a wine refrigerator and then had a wine rack built to fill the remaining space. The only other thing I had to do was add an outlet under the counter top. Easy fix since there was already electrical on the wall.
Look what my outdated built-in desk and clutter zone looks like now!!
Love, love, love!! If you want to see all the 'before and after photos' of my kitchen remodel check out my last blog post "New Year. New Face".
Remember..if you are remodeling or renovating take the time to consider what is relevant as well as the return on your investment. Hiring a professional can save you time, money and give you ideas you may not have considered.
