I love mid-century modern home design, so when a new client asked to take a tour of some mid-century homes for sale last weekend I leapt for joy… and we also got a preview of a house that will be on a public mid-century modern home tour next weekend!
They called me because of a house they had seen in the Tyrol Hills neighborhood of Golden Valley, on the western edge of Minneapolis next to Theodore Wirth Park and read my posts on the neighborhood. I was delighted to help them find more mid-century modern homes and thus started the search for mid-century moderns available for sale.
Golden Valley is a good place to look, but you can find them scattered throughout the metro area, especially in first ring suburbs. Because they were usually custom designed and built, they are more likely to be found in areas of higher priced homes, often on bigger lots. There are a surprising number of mid-century modern homes in Bloomington… perhaps not as surprising when you consider that southern suburb was developed primarily in the mid-20th century when the modernist movement was strong.

Docomomo Tour October 11, 2014 – Modern Residential Design: University Grove and Stonebridge Boulevard
The tour starts at 10:00 am in University Grove, a unique enclave of modern residential design next to the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus… at 1586 Burton. Cost is $40 general admission for non-members. The tour will continue in the afternoon at a hidden gem of modernist architecture… Stonebridge Boulevard, on the eastern edge of the former Stonebridge estate.
