When legendary Blackey's Danish and Polish bakery in nordeast Minneapolis closed, the go-to local bakery for authentic Danish pastry officially left Minneapolis… but its amazing Danish pastries didn't vanish from the Twin Cities.
Their recipes were purchased by Denny's 5th Avenue Bakery in Bloomington and their delectable treats including immense, buttery kringle, kransekage and Danish pastries are baked fresh daily in this family-owned full service bakery that also makes some of the best donuts in town.
I have driven by the unassuming Denny's 5th Avenue Bakery along American Boulevard just west of Portland for years without giving it much thought. Situated on an industrial/commercial strip I thought it was a day-old bakery or maybe a catering business, didn't expect to find fresh baked delicasies… was I ever wrong!!! While they are also a wholesale bakery, their fresh retail bakery and pastry shop is a real hidden gem!
We stopped by and picked up a fresh kringle not long ago and I had all I could do to keep from eating the whole thing, it was so delicious!!! My husband picked up a plate of cookies to share at work and I have read reviews praising their fabulous donuts… they also make fresh breads and wedding cakes.
Don't be fooled as you drive by Denny's 5th Avenue Bakery at 7840 5th Ave S, Bloomington, MN 55420. This full-service bakery that also makes authentic Danish pastries is not only worth a stop, it is worth a special trip! Bring the kids and grandkids to pick out a special treat, senior citizens get a 10% discount on Wednesdays.
We attended a wonderful holiday concert last night by the Valley Chamber Chorale featuring Christmas Music of Scandinavia and the Baltics… another reminder of the strong Scandinavian heritage and choral roots of the Twin Cities area.
