Many people who drive by Big Brain Comics on Washington Avenue in downtown Minneapolis near Open Book and the Metrodome may not even realize it is there. However, for lovers of comics and graphic novels it is an awesome destination spot… an independently owned local bookshop where the owner is an expert on comics who loves to share his expertise to help you find what you are looking for, even if you you don't know what that is!
I first heard about Big Brain Comics from our daughter-in-law nearly 10 years ago when she had a graphic novel on her Christmas list and indicated Big Brain was the place to get it. She is a K-8 librarian, and discovered Big Brain when she got a grant for developing the comics and graphic novel collections in her library. She was so impressed with owner Michael Drivas that he and his store have been her go-to source ever since.
They have something for everyone of all ages at Big Brain… from standard super hero comics… to indie/alternative comics… to Japanese Manga/anime… to graphic novels… to periodicals both comic and non-comic.
Although not all sections are kid friendly, the 'kid' section is set apart from the more 'adult' section and easily holds our grandsons' attention… enough there to keep them fascinated searching for just the right books to take home, as well as some good deals on their discount shelves. It's a great destination spot to search for books for reluctant readers… graphic novels not so easily found at traditional bookstores!
Big Brain Comics is open noon to 8 pm Monday-Saturday and Sunday noon to 5 at 1027 Washington Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55405… near the Guthrie Theater, Spill the Wine, Gold Medal Park and tons of Minneapolis riverfront lofts and condos.
