A big part of the sense of place where you live is the makeup of the people living there. New US Census data shows that our Twin Cities population is still dominated by German, Norwegian and Swedish ancestry… but we have grown in diversity, and some areas have older populations than others.
Where the younger and older people are…
- Minneapolis is a city of youth, with a median age of 32, compared to a statewide average of 37
- Eden Praire also skews young at 36
- Richfield is at the state average of 37
- Bloomington is older, with an average age of 43
- Orono's average age is 44
- Edina and Golden Valley both have an average age of 45
- 54.5% of Edina residents are female, and almost 4% of Edina residents are age 85 or older, double the state average
Diversity…
- Minneapolis is 72 percent white, 19 percent black, 6 percent Asian and 3 percent American Indian
- Hopkins is 73 percent white, 16 percent black and 10 percent Asian
- Bloomington and Eden Prairie are more diverse than the state overall, with 84 to 85 percent white residents and blacks and Asians making up most of the rest
- 14% of Richfield residents are Hispanic, compared to 9.5 percent in Minneapolis
