Minneapolis-St. Paul baby boomers on the verge of retirement are the most prepared of 30 metropolitan areas, according to US News & World Report. 83% of Twin Cities residents are currently saving for retirement, compared to 69% overall, and nearly half feel on track for retirement.
While 71% of Twin Cities residents say they plan to stay in the area after retirement (living proof of what a great place it is to live!), that still leaves nearly 30% planning to move elsewhere… don't know how many are planning to move TO the Twin Cities from other places!
Some reasons for moving are…
- to seek a warmer climate (even if only for part of the year)
- to pursue hobbies and interests
- to be closer to medical care
- to find a locale with a lower cost of living so your nest egg will stretch further
…but the reason I hear most often, and have helped many people accomplish, is…
- moving to be closer to family
This is a big one, and as Baby Boomers we are truly the sandwich generation, sometimes being pulled both ways. I have helped people both coming and going… moving to be closer to children and grandchildren, as well as moving to help aging parents.
We have experienced it ourselves. We are lucky to have our children and grandchildren right here in the Twin Cities area, but when my mother experienced a medical crisis nearly 10 years ago we helped her move from her North Dakota farm to the Twin Cities so we could be closer together.
Whether you are considering a permanent move or multiple homes/condos/townhomes in different places for different purposes, this Third Age of initial retirement can be an exciting and fulfilling time of new opportunities.
