Sunday’s Site – Armatage Neighborhood, Minneapolis

NOTE: see the bottom of Sunday's Site posts for homes for sale in the area

I had an open house in the Armatage neighborhood of southwest Minneapolis yesterday and a neighbor from across the street came over to tell me how much she loves living there.

She moved to the neighborhood a couple years ago from Linden Hills, one of the most enviable Minneapolis neighborhoods, and although she misses some of her old neighbors she has fully embraced her new neighborhood. She said she loves living near the Armatage Park ballfields and loves the neighborhood sense of community!

Named after Maude Armatage, a longtime Minneapolis Park Board Commissioner and the first woman elected to a Minneapolis municipal office, Armatage is a quiet residential neighborhood in the far southwest corner of Minneapolis. Most of the homes in the neighborhood were built in the 1950's and 1960's, with lots of ramblers and 1 1/2 story homes.

Bordering Minnehaha Creek in the northwest corner, Edina on the west along Xerxes Avenue and Richfield at Highway 62 on the south, this neighborhood has easy access to highways and Southdale shopping and medical centers. Its business strip is along Penn Avenue.

Wagners family-owned Greenhouse has been in the same location at 6024 Penn Avenue for over 100 years… and old fashioned, greet-you-at-the-door Settergren Ace Hardware has been at the corner of 54th & Penn for more than 50 years. Cafe Maude, a relative new-comer to the neighborhood, is within shouting distance of the hardware store at the other end of the short retail strip. It seems fitting that this wonderful neighborhood bistro and gathering place is named after the namesake of the neighborhood, Maude Armatage.
