Watching the snow melt

When I was out walking yesterday morning I got to thinking about all the melting snow. It may be sloppy and dirty but if you are a buyer, studying the snow melt can give you special insights into a home at this time of year.

  • You can see how high to expect nearby creeks, rivers and streams to be during spring thaw, giving insights into flood potential
  • You can see if there is any water intrusion in the basement from excess ground water or runoff
  • Moisture intensifies odors and mold… you can more readily discover issues you may not notice in dry conditions
  • You can see which parts of the yard may have drainage issues
  • You may be able to see where squirrels and chimpmunks hang out by seeing a maze of under-snow trails exposed as the snow melts!
  • You can see which parts of the yard get the most sun by which areas are the last to melt… get a sense of which parts of the house will get the most sunlight… and get a sense of how much help you will get from the sun in keeping your driveway free of snow and ice

Can you guess which side of the photo below faces north and which faces south?!

What a difference a day makes at this time of year! With sun and temperatures in the 60's yesterday, there isn't much snow left. It could all disappear this week… just in time for spring's arrival next weekend!
