When my husband and I decided we wanted to melt down our original wedding rings and re-design them into new rings we didn't realize how difficult it could be…you could just melt them and reshape them, right? We soon learned that it isn't just as easy as that!
First, since a new design would likely mean additional gold it was a matter of determining the composition of the original rings to know what to add. It was an education for us…we never realized how many different mixes there can be…nor that not all jewelers know how to find out what the composition is!
While searching for a jeweler to help us, we found a glowing online testimony for David Przetycki, owner of The Jewelers at 2902 Pentagon Drive NE in St. Anthony Village, and decided to make a visit.
We could tell it was a special place as soon as we were greeted by David's smiling face. He was helping some customers when we came in…a young man who was picking up his glasses he had brought in to be repaired (he said he brings everything to David!)…and a woman and her daughter having work done on some family jewelry. His friendly, attentive care for both people and their 'projects' was immediately evident.
When we explained what we wanted to do, he also voiced concerns about determining the composition of the rings, just as other jewelers had done, but he quickly made a call and said he could get it for us! Next concerns were that re-using the same gold and mixing it with new may result in some imperfections…and my diamond had a small chip…reasons other jewelers gave for starting over.
But we didn't want to start over. We wanted to continue wearing the rings we had been wearing for nearly 40 years…just in a new design. Imperfections are part of real life…they reflect the many years and experiences we have shared!
Sooo…we created a design where the surface is irregular and imperfections are integrated into the design…recessed my diamond to cradle the chipped corner… added two black diamonds for our two children…and viola… same hands, same gold & diamond, new rings!
Thank you, David…we sing your praises!
