A couple weeks ago I talked about how many Minnesotans share the end-of-summer ritual of the Minnesota State Fair. Another ritual shared by many Minnesotans is 'Rally Day'…the 'homecoming' many churches celebrate as everyone comes back together after summer vacation…like back-to-school.
Some churches take their homecoming celebrations seriously, such as the 'Welcome Days' county fair pictured in this post…celebrated by a Lutheran church in Golden Valley last Sunday. They featured pony rides, a petting zoo, inflatable games, a climbing wall, a Dixieland band, mini golf, tons of kid games with prizes, hay rides…and of course, 'fair' food…hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy…even fresh mini donuts!
For those of you not familiar with the Midwest, it is sometimes laughingly called the "Vatican of the Lutheran Church". The ELCA, the largest group of Lutheran churches, has 4.6 million members nationwide…with 800,000 of them in Minnesota, many with some Scandinavian heritage. If you live in Minnesota, chances are pretty good you will get to know a Lutheran or two!
Last weekend as I was out showing houses I noticed several churches of different denominations throughout the area setting up inflatable games and other activities, getting ready for their 'Rally Day' celebrations. There are nearly 1,500 churches that are part of the Minneapolis and St. Paul Councils of Churches…it's an undeniable part of life in Minnesota!
