Sunday’s Site – Peavey Plaza, Downtown Minneapolis

NOTE: see the bottom of Sunday's Site posts for homes for sale in the area

Nestled between Nicollet Mall and Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis is Peavey Plaza, a city-owned sunken garden with multiple levels, cascading fountains and shady corners. This outdoor park and events venue, one of the nation's best examples of a modernist sunken urban plaza, is the site of music events throughout the summer.

Yesterday was Famous Dave's 5th Annual BBQ & Blues Festival…a perfect day for it, and the crowds came out to prove it. Don't despair if you missed this festival, the summer is filled with music at Peavey Plaza!  There is free live music nearly every day in June…and local food vendors surround the plaza so you can eat while you enjoy the music.

  • Toons at Noon – lunchtime concerts, 11 to 1, Monday through Friday, June 1 – June 26, 2009
  • Alive After Five – evening concerts, 5 to 9, Monday through Friday, June 1 – June 26, 2009
  • Sommerfest – free music outside in the plaza before Minnesota Orchestra concerts inside at Orchestra Hall next door, and after Friday and Saturday evening concerts, July 17 - August 1, 2009

This urban landscape was designed by landscape architect M. Paul Friedberg in 1973, and its use has matured along with the trees. It is interesting to see the photo below from when it was new. The big reflecting pool you see below is now the site of the summer music stages you see in the photos above, with people lounging on the steps and grass under a canopy of trees…and children getting wet in the corner fountains.
