As I prepared to go out looking at homes with a client yesterday afternoon I realized I would be ending around dinner time near the Afghan Restuarant in Crystal (renamed from the Crystal Bistro to more clearly reflect its ethnic cuisine). Another client had told me about this wonderful restaurant…he said the lentil soup was to die for. It sounded like a perfect opportunity to try their take-out.
Afghan Restaurant is located in an unassuming strip along Bass Lake Road in Crystal, MN, between Broadway and Highway 81. I arrived before dinner time and most of the booths were empty, but they were set up for the expected arrival of a big group. I learned they have belly dancers on the weekend.
It had a cozy, homespun atmosphere…and the owner who greeted me was very friendly. I told him it was my first visit and asked for his recommendations to add to the lentil soup. He recommended a pasta combo of mantu and aushak…said it was the only place to get them in the Twin Cities…and chicken tendori. He brought me some delicious chai tea while I was waiting, and in the meantime the restaurant started to fill up. Many appeared to be regulars, as he greeted them by name.
My client was right…the lentil soup was fantastic! The chicken tendori was deliciously tender and the chutney he added to the order gave it a wonderful kick. The pastas were a lovely departure from the more familiar Italian pastas…I preferred the mantu.
All was delicious!! My thanks to Tony for this wonderful discovery…we will be back. I can hardly wait to explore more of the menu!
