Sunday’s Site – Plymouth Playhouse

NOTE: see the bottom of Sunday's Site posts for homes for sale in the area

Churchbasement1 When my cousin came to visit from New Jersey last week the one must-do thing on her 14-year-old daughter's list was seeing Church Basement Ladies 2: A Second Helping at the Plymouth Playhouse. They saw the original version (which started back in 2005) on another visit and it was such a hit that she wanted to be sure to see the sequel!

Inspired by the books of Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson, creators of the book Growing Up Lutheran, the musical gives a humorous account of Midwestern small-town life in 1969-1970. Like A Prairie Home Companion, it speaks the laughable truth to those of us who have experienced it in real life, and is simply hilarious to those haven't.

The Plymouth Playhouse is an intimate 211-seat theater…part of a hotel complex in the Twin Cities suburb of Plymouth, Minnesota. It originally opened in Minnesota style during the middle of a blizzard in January 1974 with Woody Allen's Play It Again Sam. Best known for producing award-winning musicals and comedies, it has since been the home of many long-running productions, including Pump Boys and Dinettes and Nunsense…which each ran for five years.

It began its focus on local, home grown humor in 1997 with How to Talk Minnesotan The Musical, based on Howard Mohr's best-selling book How to Talk Minnesotan: A Visitor's Guide. It had  ran continuously until 2002, with some reprises in 2003-2004.
