Stunning MCM house by Henry Hoover, pioneer of New England modernist architecture

from Mid-Century HomeHenry Hoover’s Germeshausen house in Weston, MA

Modernism Week in Palm Springs wraps up this weekend, and although we aren’t there this year I keep getting reminders of the fascinating things going on there. But I am also eager to learn more about what happened during the modernist movement in other parts of the country.

New England modernist pioneer Henry Hoover is a new discovery for me. He designed more than 50 modern houses in his hometown of Lincoln, Mass., and other suburbs west of Boston, as well as houses in New Hampshire, Georgia, and Florida. Mid-Century Homes had a feature on what they called his most outstanding house, built in 1958. I couldn’t resist sharing it.

The practical home feature at the bottom of the photo below made me smile. If you have ever witnessed a floor covered by shoes in the entry hall perhaps you will appreciate the clever ‘shoe garage’ in this house as I did.

I am a Midwesterner, and this house makes me think of ties to Frank Lloyd Wright… both have a focus on siting and the synthesis of landscape and the house, using natural materials.
