If you are handy and like to do much of your own renovation work it can be easy to forget about pulling permits. Although it may not seem necessary to pull permits if you are doing your own work solely for your own enjoyment, it can become a different story when you sell.
Thirteen metro area cities require an inspection prior to selling your home. If you are planning to sell, be sure to check out your city requirements prior to doing work so they don’t make you do something over again to meet their specifications. This has happened to clients of mine and it’s frustrating…in time, work and money!
Even if your city doesn’t require an inspection it could cost you when it comes times to sell. I have had it happen more than once that clients have backed out of a purchase because permits weren’t pulled for renovations on a property they were considering. I have even had clients back out of a signed purchase agreement contingent upon inspection because they felt uncomfortable about the quality of the work when permits weren’t pulled and it wasn’t professionally inspected at the time of the renovations.
Save yourself future time and money…always pull permits for renovations.
